Location: Vega Baja district, Alicante province, Comunidad de Valencia, Spain.

The Area: Pilar de la Horadada is located on the Costa Blanca coastline between Torrevieja and San Javier.
History: The history of Pilar de la Horadada goes back many centuries and the town has has settlers from various cultures including Iberians (ancient Spanish peoples), Carthaginians, Romans and Arabs, the town's Archaeological-Ethnological Museum housing artefacts showing evidence of these historical inhabitants. After the Christian re-conquest Pilar de la Horadada stood on the border of 2 rival Kingdoms Murcia (Castilla) and Valencia. The town is named after its 15th Century watchtower which was built to warn inhabitants of imminent attacks from invading pirates, many of whom sailed this coastline during the 14th to 16th centuries. Pilar de la Horadada's recent history is dominated by its independence from Orihuela in 1986, after which the town newest industry - tourism - began to grow in importance. before this Pilar de la Horadada was mostly dependent on agriculture, the fertile surrounding land being ideal for the growing of lettuces, celery and broccoli and also flowers (roses and chrysanthemums).
Pilar de la Horadada Fiestas: Pilar de la Horadada celebrates a number of festivals and fiestas and these include the celebration of the town's independence from Orihuela (July 30th), the festival of the Virgen del Pilar (October), the town carnival held in February, the Semana Santa at Easter and the Romerío de San Isidro in May. Pilar de la Horadada also hold a blues festival during August.

Places of Interest: Places of interest in and around Pilar de la Horadada include the aforementioned Archaeological-Ethnological Museum, where you can learn a little of the history of the town, Parish Church of "Nuestra Señora del Pilar", re-built in 1986 on the same site as the original church and the bell tower is from the original structure, the 15th Century watchtower (which is located in nearby Torre de la Horadada), the archaeological ruins of Thiar (remaind of an old Roman town which stood on the Via Augusta) and the Rio Seco (Dry River) at nearby Pinar de Campoverde, a protected Natural Park with interesting flora and fauna.
Pilar de la Horadada Map: Pilar de la Horadada is the southernmost town on the Costa Blanca (to the south is the Costa Calida) and the southernmost town in the Alicante province (to the south is Murcia).

Pilar de la Horadada can be easily accessed from the N-332 coast road or from the AP-7 (E-15) motorway and is around 10 minutes drive from Murcia (San Javier) airport and about 50 minutes from Alicante airport.
Pilar de la Horadada Weather: Pilar de la Horadada enjoys a warm Mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild winters, making it a perfect place to visit all year round. There are a good selection of properties available to rent in the town and area, for the purchase of a holiday home it is also ideal with plenty of choices on offer.
Pilar de la Horadada Beaches: The beaches of Pilar de la Horadada stretch for about 5 kilometres and while fairly narrow consist of fine white sand and are mostly safe and clean, the two popular beaches at Las Higuericas and Mil Palmeras both have 'Blue Flag' status. The nearby beaches in the Mar Menor resorts are even finer, check out Lo pagan if you get the chance, you can also try the famous healing mud baths while you are there.
